Jean
James first learned to play a ukulele instrument while attending a teacher’s
college in New Jersey. With the four chords, she learned and played
contemporary songs, mostly folk music. That summer, she had brought along
her “little friend” while hostelling around Europe. After travelling in
Europe, she started teaching the uke to her sixth grade class in Golden,
Colorado.
After that, she had packed away the ukulele for several years and
it was not until her and her husband moved to Hawai’i, while he was in graduate
school, that her instrument saw the light of day. A couple of years later,
the uke found itself being packed and not dusted off until they retired in
Sahuarita, Arizona.
From there, the rest is history filled with joys of teaching
others, improving her skills and lasting memories of wonderful ukulele friends.
The ‘Silver Strummers’ ukulele club was formed and they had played at different
locations around Sahuarita.
With another move, Jean is very
excited to share her love of playing uke to her new friends here in Sun City
Vistoso.
