Coronado School Astronomy Outreach Program
The goal for this program is to stimulate student interest in math and science, using astronomy as a hook.
Our Astronomy Club has adopted Coronado K-8 school in
Catalina, AZ. We have provided telescopes for every 5th grader in
2009, 2010 and 2011. We want to continue the project for the 2012
class making a total of over 400 telescopes. We would like to expand
the program this year by providing at least two scholarships for 7th graders
to Astronomy Summer Camp on Mount Lemmon. We also provide astronomy
related exercises in and out of the classroom for the 5th and 7th grade
classes.
Funds used to buy the telescope are donated through the Arizona State Tax Credit program. State tax payers can donate up to $200 a person ($400 per couple) to a school project. This is not a deduction, but a tax credit. You subtract the full amount of your donation from taxes owed. If you can help, call Bob Cratty on 825-0157. He will bring you a donation form. Coronado School will send you a receipt to file with your tax return.
(Note that our program is affiliated with Project Astro for the training of the teachers.) |
